A Japanese damascene cigarette case executed in the nunome-zogan technique, featuring gold and silver inlay on a blackened iron or steel ground. The front panel depicts a traditional landscape with a multi-tiered pagoda, a torii gate, and thatched-roof dwellings against the backdrop of Mount Fuji. The reverse panel shows a river scene with a cottage, a figure in a boat, and a person on the riverbank. Both panels are enclosed within wide borders of dense foliate and floral scrolls. The interior has a blackened finish and contains two articulated gold-toned cigarette retainers. Included are two vintage five-count Wild Woodbine cigarette packets manufactured by W.D. and H.O. Wills of Bristol and London, one of which references the Antwerp International Exhibition 1885. The reverse of the case is marked K24, indicating the use of 24 carat gold, alongside an illegible vertical Japanese signature.
Approximate dimensions: 9cm x 8cm.
