A 19th century French Neoclassical inkwell in the Louis XVI style. The piece features a central gilt bronze reservoir cast in the form of a classical urn, decorated with chased foliate swags and fluted details. The reservoir is surmounted by a hinged, domed lid with a bud-shaped finial. This central element is mounted on a square plinth of figured marble with deep purple and white veining. The marble base is fitted with a curved gilt metal pen rest at the front and is enclosed by an ornamental post-and-chain railing. The entire assembly is supported on a gilt metal base plate with four compressed bun feet. The underside of the metal base shows illegible stamped or scratched markings and a small handwritten number.
