A three-volume set of Richard Welford’s History of Newcastle and Gateshead, comprising the 14th and 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. The volumes are professionally bound in full red morocco-style leather with elaborate gilt-tooled borders and a central gilt armorial crest of Newcastle-upon-Tyne featuring the motto Fortiter Defendit Triumphans. Each spine is constructed with five raised bands, forming six compartments decorated with gilt lettering and repeated Maltese cross motifs. The books feature marbled endpapers in a traditional blue, cream, and red shell pattern, accented by decorative gilt inner dentelles. The top edges are gilt. Accompanying the volumes is an original paper ephemera item: a softcover auction catalogue titled Catalogue of the Extensive Library of S. F. Longstaffe, Esq., of Norton, printed in 1894 by H. Wilson of Thornaby-on-Tees. This catalogue identifies the present work as lot 336 on an internal page, providing historical provenance for the set.
