An original mid-20th-century oil on board painting by the British artist George R. Deakins (1911-1982). The work features a highly stylized, semi-abstracted landscape depicting the silhouettes of dwellings and spindly, vertical trees set against a dramatic, horizontally banded sky in shades of deep red and ochre. The painting is executed in the artist’s characteristic expressionistic manner, utilising heavy impasto and fluid palette knife application to create a rich textural surface with strokes of green, yellow, and black in the foreground. It is signed Deakins in white paint to the lower left. The painting is presented in its original wooden frame with a grey-wash wood grain finish and a silver-toned inner slip. The reverse of the board bears a printed artist’s label with home and studio addresses in Nettlecombe and Dunster, Somerset.
