Buyer's Premium:

A rectangular wooden box finished in black lacquer with gold and polychrome painted decoration in the Japanese export style, dating to the late Meiji period. The lid features a narrative scene depicting figures behind a wooden lattice fence, accompanied by a vertical rectangular cartouche inscribed with the characters for Yako no Seki. To the right of the cartouche is a smaller line of script including the character for edition. The four sides are decorated with various genre scenes, including figures engaged in outdoor activities, a traveler with a pack and a figure with a monkey, a man balancing a bowl on his head beneath a pine tree, and two figures sharing a large red lacquer tray. The exterior uses gold paint to highlight garment patterns and landscape features. A small square cartouche on the lid contains the character for zi, and a straw-wrapped container on one side features the character for gu. The interior is finished in a vibrant contrasting red lacquer. The box is constructed with a moulded base and is fitted with brass hinges and a lock escutcheon.
