This three-volume set comprises the complete works of William Shakspere, published by the London Printing and Publishing Company, Limited. The edition features a memoir and an essay on the playwright’s genius by Barry Cornwall, with additional historical and critical studies of the text, characters, and commentators by Richard Grant White and R. H. Horne. The work is extensively illustrated, containing wood engravings from designs by Kenny Meadows and approximately 100 steel-plate portraits of eminent actors in character. The set is organised by genre: Volume I contains the Comedies, Volume II contains the Tragedies, and Volume III includes the Historical Plays, Poems, and Sonnets. The volumes are bound in mid-Victorian half-green calf over textured dark cloth boards. The spines are decorated with five raised bands, gilt-tooled compartments featuring a Greek-key pattern, red leather title labels, and secondary green leather volume/content labels. The interior features marbled endpapers and matching marbled edges to the text block.
