Lot 360: A J. Weiss and Son Portable Ophthalmic Bullseye Spirit Lamp and Case

This antique medical examination instrument is a portable bullseye spirit lamp manufactured by the surgical instrument maker J. Weiss and Son of London. The set comprises a nickel-plated fuel reservoir base of oval section, featuring a screw-down filler cap and a brass wick burner assembly with a tethered cap. A detachable condenser lens unit is mounted to a central post, containing a thick glass bullseye magnifying lens within a blackened metal housing. The instrument is housed within its original fitted metal protective case of matching oval form. The top of the case lid is fitted with a raised metal plaque bearing the royal coat of arms with the lion and unicorn motifs. The plaque is inscribed J. WEISS and SON to the upper edge and 62 STRAND LONDON to the lower edge. These lamps were utilised by medical professionals for focused illumination during ophthalmic or surgical examinations in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
